HOW TO FORM A BAL PANCHAYAT

There is a need for Bal Panchayat because children need a platform to express their opinions and views concerning children. While forming a Bal Panchayat the role of facilitators is extremely important, especially in theearly stages.

Role of Facilitator:
The foremost thing the facilitator has to do is to come down to the child's level of thinking. He has to create an atmosphere where children feel comfortable with him. He has to constantly back children in children's activities. He should be very patient, dedicated and affectionate.

Rapport Building with Children:
In the beginning stage, rapport has to be built with children. Once rapport is built, then group division of children according to age group has to be done. There should be separate group for boys and girls. Age group of members should be kept in mind while group formation.

Formation of Groups and Conduction of Meetings :
After the group formation, there should be regular meetings. In these meeting, depending on development level of the children, information and knowledge on various children related issues and problems should be given to them. There should be wide ranging discussion on the problems, which children faces in their day to day life and one should let the solution come from children themselves. In this regular discussion the facilitators should not force their thoughts on children. The adult mindset has to be restrained.

Time Schedule :
The time of the meeting should be fixed according to children's availability. This must not affect children's study schedule.

Training Program:
To make Bal Panchayat effective, various training program and workshop should be conducted for the personality development of children. Children who have leadership qualities should be identified and given opportunities so that in future they will be able to handle the activities on their own.

Exposure Visits :
The children should be given exposure, visit to other NGO's who are dealing with children related activities so that they learn and experience from each other.
